Mako and Culver Urge Pennsylvanians to Register as Organ Donors

Organ Donation Advocates Gather at Pennsylvania Capitol

“I wouldn’t be standing here today without the gift I received, and without a family who, in the middle of their own grief, made the choice to give someone else a second chance,” Rep. Zach Mako said on October 5, 2026, during a press conference in the Harrisburg Capitol Rotunda.

Mako, alongside Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver, joined the Gift of Life Donor Program, donor families, and transplant recipients to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage Pennsylvania residents to register as donors, the Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus reported. Both legislators are organ donor recipients who spoke publicly about their personal experiences before participating in the Steps for Life Advocacy Walk around the Capitol building.

Personal Stakes for Pennsylvania Lawmakers

Mako stated that the life-saving transplant allowed him to continue serving in the National Guard, travel, and maintain an active lifestyle. He represents the 183rd Legislative District, which includes parts of Lehigh and Northampton counties.

Culver shared a similar personal connection to the cause during the event. “Organ donation is deeply personal to me because a living donor saved my life,” Culver said, noting that a family member proved to be a match and made the necessary medical sacrifice.

Over 6,000 Pennsylvanians Wait for Organ Transplants

According to figures provided by the Gift of Life Donor Program, more than 6,000 Pennsylvanians are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Event participants also heard personal testimonies from a donor family and an additional transplant recipient regarding the impact of organ donation.
