Incheon Court Sentences Son to Eight Years for Killing Mother
“The victim was attacked surreptitiously during her ordinary daily life, and the mental and physical suffering the victim would have experienced at the time of the incident is difficult to gauge,” the Incheon District Court stated during sentencing.
An Incheon court sentenced a man in his 40s to eight years in prison for killing his 60-year-old mother with a weapon inside an apartment, News1 reported on Oct. 15. The Incheon District Court Criminal Division 12, presided over by Judge Shin Sang-ryeol, handed down the prison term to the defendant, identified by his surname A, on charges of parricide.
Mental State and Court Treatment Order
The court determined that the defendant possessed a diminished capacity for discernment and decision-making at the time of the crime due to a mental illness. Alongside the eight-year prison sentence, Judge Shin ordered A to undergo treatment at a medical custody facility.
In delivering the verdict, the panel of judges acknowledged the severity of the attack on the victim, who was killed in her home. However, the court also weighed mitigating factors during sentencing. Judges took into consideration that the defendant admitted to the crime, had no prior criminal record, and was in a state of diminished mental capacity when the offense occurred.
Timeline of the Incheon Apartment Incident
The fatal attack took place on the morning of March 31 at approximately 9:00 a.m. inside an apartment located in Wanggil-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon. Investigators responded after receiving an emergency 112 report stating that blood was flowing out from near the front door of the residence.
Police officers forced entry into the apartment and discovered the victim, a woman in her 60s identified by her surname B, dead at the scene. The defendant was also present inside the apartment with severe self-inflicted wounds to his hands and neck sustained immediately following the attack. Emergency responders transported A to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and recovered in the intensive care unit.
Defendant’s Intentions and Investigation Findings
Authorities established that the defendant attempted to take his own life immediately after killing his mother. Investigators uncovered that A believed his mother would suffer and struggle if he were to die first, prompting the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
