Woman’s 33-Centimeter Ovarian Cyst Highlights Importance of Early Detection
Jakarta, Indonesia – A 27-year-old woman from Surabaya, Indonesia, recently gained attention after sharing her experience with a large ovarian cyst measuring 33 centimeters in diameter. Uun Yosie’s story underscores the importance of recognizing potential symptoms and seeking timely medical attention.
Initial Symptoms and Misdiagnosis
Yosie initially dismissed her symptoms – including bloating, abdominal discomfort, and a feeling of fullness – as stress-related or due to digestive issues. She noticed her lower abdomen appeared more bloated than her upper abdomen, but didn’t consider it a serious concern. Symptoms became more pronounced at age 27, with persistent bloating, a hardening of the abdomen, frequent acid reflux, and a loss of appetite.
Diagnosis and Findings
Medical examinations, including ultrasound, blood tests, and CT scans, revealed a 33-centimeter cyst. The cyst was identified as a neoplasm, characterized by abnormal cell growth due to genetic changes. While not directly hereditary, the growth stemmed from cellular errors.
Contributing Factors
Beyond genetic factors, Yosie emphasized the role of lifestyle elements. “Lifestyle (stress level, sleeping hours, exercise, etc.), diet/nutrition, and hormones also influence why my cells can make errors and grow into cysts,” she stated according to DetikHealth.
Treatment and Recovery
Yosie underwent surgery at a hospital in Penang, Malaysia, to remove the cyst and her ovary. The procedure was successful, and she is currently in the recovery phase, undergoing routine check-ups. She plans to return to Penang for a follow-up examination three months post-surgery.
During recovery, Yosie is restricted from strenuous exercise for three months, limited to walking. No specific dietary restrictions were prescribed by her doctors.
Understanding Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or within the ovaries. Many are harmless and disappear on their own. Though, some can cause symptoms like bloating, pain, and irregular periods. In rare cases, they can grow large and require medical intervention. A study mentioned in DetikHealth suggests nutrition plays a role in the management of ovarian cysts.
