The simulations evaluate radiation exposure risk using a scale measuring estimated cumulative radiation doses over four days in grays (Gy), a standard unit of ionizing radiation dose. According to Scientific American’s fallout models cited by Newsweek, an attack targeting U.S. missile silos in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, and North Dakota produces starkly contrasting impact levels depending on wind patterns and regional geography.

In an average-case scenario, states categorized as least affected—including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan—face estimated exposure ranges from 0.001 Gy to 0.5 Gy. By comparison, states in primary danger zones, such as Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota, face estimated exposures ranging from 1 Gy to 84 Gy, with scientists classifying any dose exceeding 8 Gy as lethal.
A worst-case scenario modeled on a simulated attack from a specific day in 2021 accounts for specific wind directions to map fallout trajectories. Under this model, the least affected states—spanning Maine down through Mississippi and the Atlantic seaboard—would absorb estimated radiation between 0.1 Gy and 2 Gy. Meanwhile, the remainder of the country would encounter exposure levels ranging from 2 Gy to 84 Gy.
Expert Assessments on Global and Regional Vulnerability
Arms control specialists and academic researchers caution that geographical distance from missile silos offers limited protection against the systemic disruptions triggered by atomic detonations. John Erath, Senior Policy Director for the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, told Newsweek that while populations residing near military installations, ICBM silos, or submarine bases face immediate and severe consequences, any nuclear exchange carries catastrophic global impacts.

“Nowhere is truly safe from fallout and other consequences like contamination of food and water supplies and prolonged radiation exposure,” Erath stated to Newsweek, noting that administrations across political parties have historically maintained that nuclear weapons serve strictly for defense and deterrence.
Christian G. Appy, Director of the Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Democracy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, told Newsweek that even a relatively limited nuclear exchange would precipitate a nuclear winter and widespread famine capable of killing at least a billion people globally.
