Bungie Implements Strict Anti-Cheat Measures for Marathon Extraction Shooter

Ahead of its March 5, 2026, release, Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, is taking a firm stance against cheaters. The developer has announced a multi-layered approach encompassing preventative measures, severe punishments, and a unique server architecture designed to minimize opportunities for illicit activity. This commitment follows concerns raised by cheating issues in similar games, such as ARC Raiders.

Permanent Bans for Cheaters

Bungie has stated it will not tolerate cheating in Marathon, promising swift and permanent bans for those caught violating the game’s terms of service. This policy contrasts with some competitors, like ARC Raiders, which have adopted more lenient approaches to dealing with rule-breakers.

Server Authority and ‘Fog of War’ System

To proactively combat cheating, Bungie is implementing a server authority structure. This means that all critical game actions, including movement, interactions, and loot acquisition, will be regulated by the game server rather than processed on the player’s client. This approach aims to eliminate a significant avenue for cheaters who typically exploit client-side vulnerabilities through third-party applications.

Further enhancing security, Marathon will utilize a “Fog of War” system. This limits the amount of information the game client receives at any given time. Unlike many games that load extensive data when entering a latest area—creating opportunities for exploits like loot tracking and wall hacking—the “Fog of War” restricts visibility and reduces the potential for cheating.

Protecting Raid Progress and Loot

Bungie is likewise addressing concerns about loot loss during raids due to cheaters or technical issues. Players disconnected mid-raid will be able to rejoin at their previous location, preserving their progress and earned loot. The developer has also pledged to restore any gear or loot lost due to server-side technical problems.

Players will have an opportunity to experience Marathon firsthand during a weekend server slam scheduled for February 26, 2026, to March 2, 2026.
