How to Get a Blue Shield in Marathon

A blue shield can significantly improve survivability in Marathon, but acquiring one requires effort and a bit of luck. Here’s a breakdown of the methods available to players, whether engaging in PvE or PvP combat.

Where to Uncover Blue Shields

There are three primary ways to obtain a blue shield in Marathon:

  • High-Value Event Loot Containers: Loot a blue shield from containers like guarded USEC Crates. These events, such as those found in Hauler on Perimeter, are challenging due to the large number of AI opponents.
  • Locked Rooms: Discover a blue shield within a container in a locked room. Accessing these rooms requires specific keys. Keep in mind that keys found on one map aren’t always usable on others; for example, an Outpost key found on Dire Marsh may not be usable until Outpost is unlocked.
  • Looting Other Runners: Obtain a blue shield by looting it from another player. Playing as Rook can be advantageous in this scenario, as scavenging doesn’t necessarily require winning a direct fight.

Challenges and Strategies

Each method presents its own difficulties. USEC Crate events are notoriously difficult and acquiring keys for locked rooms can be rare. While looting from other players is an option, it often involves a risky confrontation. If you’re attempting to fight for a blue shield with only a green shield, be prepared for a challenging encounter, as the extra protection a blue shield provides can be decisive.

Locked room keys are generally worth using, as the quality of loot found within these rooms is significantly higher than elsewhere on the map.
