Margaret Lohan, Portumna Teacher, Remembered for Dignity and Courage

Margaret Lohan (née Cunniffe), a beloved teacher and resident of Portumna, Galway, Ireland, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, following a long illness. She was surrounded by her family at Galway University Hospital.

A Life Dedicated to Family and Education

Margaret was a devoted mother to Sinéad, Fiona, Ruth, Sarah and Seán, and a loving wife to her husband, Padraig. She is remembered for her dignity and courage throughout her illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Denis and Maureen Cunniffe of Liswilliam, Dysart, Co Roscommon.

She is survived by her sisters, Denise, Joanne, Fiona, and Maura, as well as her mother-in-law, Ann Lohan, aunts, nieces, nephews, extended family, teaching colleagues, neighbors, and friends.

Funeral Arrangements

Margaret will repose in Dignity Funeral Care, located on the grounds of Portumna Retirement Village, on Tuesday, February 24th, from 5 pm to 7 pm. A funeral cortege will arrive at St. Brigid’s Church, Portumna, on Wednesday, February 25th, at 10:45 am for Requiem Mass at 11 am. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Portumna.

For those unable to attend, the Requiem Mass will be available to view online. The family requests privacy at their home on Wednesday morning.
