Marianne Verhaert, Grobbendonk Mayor and Flemish Parliament Member, Hospitalized

Marianne Verhaert, the mayor of Grobbendonk and a member of the Flemish Parliament, is currently hospitalized, having acknowledged ignoring signals from her body. This marks the second time in a year she has been admitted to the hospital for health-related reasons.

Recent Hospitalization and Cause

Verhaert announced her hospitalization on Thursday evening via Instagram, stating she had “ignored the signals of her body a little too long.” RTV reports she will remain in the hospital for the coming days to recover and will be unavailable during this time.

In her Instagram post, Verhaert expressed a tendency to push through challenges, but recognized that continuous exertion is not always the best approach. “Sometimes, forced stillness is the only way to move forward again,” she wrote.

Previous Health Concerns

Last year, Verhaert was also hospitalized due to severe pain in her arm, shoulder, and fingers, stemming from nerve compression in her neck. She required rest and treatment at that time. VRT News detailed this prior health issue.

Temporary Transfer of Responsibilities

During Verhaert’s absence, her mayoral responsibilities will be temporarily distributed among the Grobbendonk schepencollege (city council). Brent Wouters, the first schepen (alderman), will assume her statutory powers, as stipulated by decree. VRT News reported Wouters’ statement on the matter, noting that other responsibilities will be divided among the remaining council members.
