Mark Nawaqanitawase will return to rugby union after a stint with the Sydney Roosters, leaving his international allegiance open between Australia, Fiji, and Italy ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

The 26-year-old winger has signed a two-year contract with the Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan, coached by former Wallabies boss Robbie Deans. His agent states that Nawaqanitawase will complete the three-year stand-down period required for a change of national representation by August next year.

Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights Signing and Upcoming Move

Nawaqanitawase transitions back to union following an extensive multi-code career shift. He spent five seasons in Super Rugby with the Waratahs from 2020 to 2024, played for Australia at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, competed in rugby sevens at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and then switched to rugby league with the Sydney Roosters later in 2024.

His stint in the NRL culminated this month in a grand final victory where he scored two tries for the Roosters. Despite returning to the 15-player code, he intends to prioritize his club transition over immediate international duties. He addressed public speculation through a statement on Instagram.

“Pour l’instant, ma seule priorité est de m’installer au Japon dans quelques semaines et de m’intégrer à ma nouvelle équipe, les Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights. J’évaluerai mes options et je prendrai une décision l’année prochaine concernant mon avenir international.”

International Eligibility Rules and Wallabies Expectations

Under World Rugby regulation, a player may switch national allegiance only once, meaning a future cap for Fiji or Italy would permanently bar him from ever representing the Wallabies again. His paternal heritage links him to Fiji, while his grandmother connects him to Italy.

Because he is unavailable for the November Nations Championship fixtures, Nawaqanitawase leaves Australia’s selection staff waiting. Wallabies captain Harry Wilson expressed confidence during a media appearance regarding the winger’s eventual choice.

Wilson said he did not think he would have to do much convincing. He added: “J’ai joué avec lui chez les Junior Wallabies, puis chez les Wallabies, et je l’ai vu hier soir soutenir les Kangaroos. Je pense que c’est assez évident de savoir pour qui il veut jouer.”

Wallabies head coach Les Kiss echoed that optimism while confirming that ongoing dialogue remains active between team management and the player. Kiss stated that there is no doubt regarding Nawaqanitawase’s desire to wear the gold jersey again.
