Hunter Biden and Martin Sheen Discuss Addiction, Art and Recovery in Los Angeles
In an interview at his Los Angeles home art studio on Tuesday, Sept. 8, Hunter Biden sat down with actor Martin Sheen to discuss his recovery from addiction, his lifelong ambition to become a painter, and his family history. Biden, the 56-year-old son of former President Joe Biden and the late Neilia Hunter Biden, spoke candidly about surviving the car crash that killed his mother and sister, handling decades of public scrutiny, and finding stability through art.
Pursuing a Lifelong Passion Through Canvas and Sketchbooks
During the conversation, Biden revealed that he wanted to be an artist since childhood, despite later earning degrees from Georgetown and Yale Law School and working as a lobbyist and for investment and advisory firms. His professional background also includes serving on the boards of organizations such as Amtrak and World Food Program USA. Regarding the pressure to follow his father into politics, Biden noted, I bet your boys [Emilio, Ramon and Charlie] get the same question.
He recounted how his mother once observed, He’s going to be the poet and the painter.
He added, But what I realize now is that I never really had the courage to do that.
His daughter Maisy currently attends the master’s program for painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, continuing the family’s artistic pursuits.
Painting Helps Biden Maintain His Sobriety
Biden first achieved sobriety in June 2019. He credited his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, with recognizing his need for a daily creative outlet to help maintain his recovery. That encouragement led him to pick up a painting table, setting off a seven-year period in which he has produced hundreds of artworks.
Connecting Over Mutual Battles With Substance Use
Sheen, an award-winning actor known for roles in The West Wing and The Departed, connected with Biden over their mutual battles with substance use. The two men discussed the spiritual dimensions of addiction and recovery, noting that individuals often mistake the artificial highs of addiction for transcendent experiences. Sheen and Biden agreed that achieving true sobriety allows individuals to access that depth of feeling naturally, accompanied by a profound appreciation for their own humanity and a desire to make amends.
Reflecting on Parenthood and Family Life
Biden has children—Naomi (32), Finnegan (28), and Maisy (26)—along with a son, Beau Jr., with his current wife Melissa, and a grandson, Willie. Sheen reflected on raising his own children at a young age, drawing parallels to Biden’s early family life. Biden noted that his children currently reside in the Silver Lake neighborhood.
