Maths Enrolments Rebound, but Indigenous Students Lag Behind

Maths enrolments in Australian schools have increased for the second consecutive year, but Indigenous students remain significantly behind their non-Indigenous peers, according to data from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

Enrolments in senior maths subjects rose by 4.3% in 2023, reversing a decline seen during the pandemic, as reported by ACARA. This increase follows government initiatives to boost STEM education, including $150 million in funding for maths and science programs announced in 2022.

“The recovery reflects improved access to resources and targeted support for schools,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Education. “However, disparities persist, particularly among disadvantaged groups.”

Challenges for Indigenous Students

Despite the overall rebound, Indigenous students are taking longer to catch up. In 2023, only 38% of Indigenous Year 12 students completed a senior maths subject, compared to 62% of non-Indigenous students, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

Dr. Lisa Thompson, an education researcher at the University of Melbourne, attributed the gap to “systemic barriers, including under-resourced schools in remote areas and a lack of culturally relevant teaching materials.”

Government Response and Future Steps

The federal government has pledged to address the disparity through its 2023-2027 Indigenous Education Strategy, which includes funding for Indigenous maths mentors and partnerships with local communities. However, advocacy groups argue more targeted action is needed.

“Closing this gap requires long-term investment and collaboration with Indigenous leaders,” said Amanda Carter, CEO of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. “Recent efforts are a step in the right direction, but progress remains slow.”

What’s Next?

Educational experts suggest expanding access to online maths tutoring and increasing the number of Indigenous teachers in STEM fields. A 2022 report by the Grattan Institute found that schools with higher Indigenous teacher representation saw a 15% increase in maths enrolments over three years.

As the 2024 school year begins, the focus will remain on sustaining the rebound while addressing persistent inequities. “This is a complex issue,” said ACARA director Peter Williams. “We need to measure progress not just in numbers, but in opportunities.”
