Malaysia’s e-commerce cross-border trade initiatives recorded RM438 million in export sales, according to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). The performance highlights ongoing regional integration efforts, underscored by the launch of the ASEAN Online Sales Day 2026, which aims to empower local businesses to scale their digital presence across Southeast Asia.

The digital export figures arrive alongside broader economic momentum for the country. According to MATRADE’s April 2025 trade performance report, Malaysia’s total trade rose 18.2% year-on-year to reach RM261.94 billion, marking the 16th consecutive month of positive year-on-year growth since January 2024. Exports for April 2025 expanded by 16.4% to RM133.56 billion, while imports increased by 20% to RM128.37 billion, yielding a trade surplus of RM5.19 billion—the 60th consecutive monthly surplus since May 2020.

Digital Trade and ASEAN Integration

The push to capture regional markets relies heavily on structured digital frameworks. Through the ASEAN Online Sales Day 2026, MATRADE provides Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and mid-tier companies (MTCs) with direct access to regional e-commerce consumers. By leveraging platforms like the MADANI Digital Trade (MDT) initiative, local exporters can bypass traditional logistical hurdles and establish a foothold in neighboring Southeast Asian economies.

Digital expansion complements traditional manufacturing gains. Manufactured goods, which accounted for 86.7% of total exports in April 2025, rose 19% year-on-year to RM115.82 billion. Strong global demand for electrical and electronic (E&E) products—which increased by nearly RM16 billion—alongside machinery, equipment, and processed food, anchored the manufacturing sector’s seventh consecutive month of expansion.

Sector Breakdown and Global Markets

Agriculture also contributed to the upward trajectory. According to MATRADE, agriculture goods recorded their 13th consecutive month of expansion in April 2025, climbing 3.5% year-on-year to RM8.48 billion. This growth was led by higher shipments of palm oil and palm oil-based products.

Conversely, mining goods dipped 1.3% year-on-year in April 2025 to RM8.12 billion, pulled down by reduced export prices for crude petroleum. However, liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports offset some of these losses, recording growth driven by higher export volumes and prices.

Geographically, Malaysia’s export growth spanned major trading partners, including ASEAN nations, China, the United States, the European Union, and Taiwan, which reached a new record high. Exports to Free Trade Agreement (FTA) partners experienced a robust rebound, with Mexico, India, and the Republic of Korea noting increased shipments driven largely by E&E products.

Broader Economic Context

For the January to April 2025 period, cumulative trade rose 7.2% year-on-year to RM977.61 billion. Exports climbed 7.3% to RM511.92 billion, while imports rose 7% to RM465.69 billion, generating a trade surplus of RM46.23 billion—a 10.4% increase over the same period in the previous year. According to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), net exports contributed to the country’s 4.4% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in the first quarter of 2025.

On the global stage, the World Trade Organization (WTO) reported an improvement in Malaysia’s global trade ranking to the 24th position in 2024, up from 26th in 2023. To sustain this momentum against potential global trade headwinds, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) and MATRADE continue to utilize international trade fairs, export acceleration missions, and business-matching programs to diversify export destinations and strengthen international competitiveness.
