Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule identified the upcoming Week 3 matchup against North Dakota as potentially his team’s most difficult test yet, according to comments made during his Monday media availability ahead of the Saturday night kickoff at Memorial Stadium. The No. 6 ranked team in the FCS enters the contest with a 3-0 record, while the Huskers stand at 2-0 following a 56-7 victory over Bowling Green.
Defensive Front Faces Elite FCS Challenge
Nebraska’s defense has limited opponents to 124 rushing yards per game through the first two weeks of the 2026 season, earning praise from Rhule for their response after a slow start against Ohio. According to Rhule, coordinator Rob Aurich’s defensive line is playing well and incorporating younger players like Tyson Terry into the rotation. However, Rhule noted that the unit has not yet faced a Big Ten opponent and will encounter a significant challenge against North Dakota’s physical offensive attack.
The Fighting Hawks arrive in Lincoln averaging 50.3 points and 540 yards of total offense per game, split between 251.3 rushing yards and 288.7 passing yards. Senior quarterback Jerry Kaminski anchors the unit, having completed 61 of 79 passes for 801 yards, 11 touchdowns, and two interceptions through two games, alongside running back Charles Langama, who has rushed for 255 yards and two scores.
Rhule described Kaminski as a premier facilitator who understands play calls and gets the ball to open playmakers efficiently. “They do a great job schematically,” Rhule said. “When you watch Kaminsky, he’s got great weapons. They can get in spread, they can drop back, they can throw the football, but they’re an elite running team.”
Offensive Momentum and Protection Priorities
On the offensive side, Nebraska enters Week 3 averaging 52.5 points and 534.5 yards per game. Quarterback Anthony Colandrea earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors after throwing for 222 yards and four touchdowns against Bowling Green. Rhule credited the UNLV transfer with providing an immediate offensive spark since arriving in Lincoln.
Despite the high-scoring output, Rhule emphasized that the offensive line must improve its pass protection to keep Colandrea and his backups upright. Rhule also pointed to special teams execution, pass rush consistency, and penalty reduction as primary areas of focus during weekly practice, noting that the team committed three penalties and mixed up a punt return against Bowling Green.
The Huskers have successfully converted all eight of their red-zone opportunities into touchdowns this season, a stark contrast to struggles in 2025. Rhule attributed that improvement to Colandrea’s mobility and extra practice time afforded by an early spring schedule.
Series History and Game Logistics
Nebraska holds a 2-0 all-time record against North Dakota, including a 38-17 victory in 2022, and maintains a 16-0 undefeated mark against FCS opponents. A victory on Saturday would secure the program’s third consecutive undefeated nonconference regular season under Rhule.
The game is scheduled for a 6:15 p.m. kickoff on Saturday at Memorial Stadium and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
