West Virginia Film Industry Gains Momentum with Netflix Successes
FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The film industry in West Virginia is experiencing a period of growth, highlighted by recent successes of a local production company, Allegheny Image Factory. Two of their films, “Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story” and “The Bad Guardian,” have recently ranked among the top five movies on Netflix, signaling a positive trend for the state’s burgeoning film scene.
Allegheny Image Factory’s Rise to Prominence
Allegheny Image Factory, based in Fairmont, West Virginia, is owned and operated by brothers Robert and Jeffrey Tinnell. The company’s recent success with “Gaslit by My Husband” – currently the No. 1 movie on Netflix – and “The Bad Guardian,” which reached No. 4 on the platform, has brought national attention to the state’s filmmaking capabilities. Both films were shot in Marion and Harrison counties, with principal photography taking place in Fairmont, Mannington, and Shinnston .
“It is a privilege to be able to bring real movies with real budgets into the state and contribute to both the economy and economic diversification, as well as raising our profile in a positive manner,” said Robert Tinnell . “We desire to give back and celebrate the place that raised us, and that means a great deal to us.”
Film Tax Incentives Fuel Growth
The growth of the film industry in West Virginia is largely attributed to the state’s Film Production Tax Credit, passed by the legislature. This incentive encourages film production within the state, attracting both small and large-scale projects . Jeffrey Tinnell explained that the tax incentive is “a big key component when you see movies shot in different places” .
Economic Impact on Local Communities
Allegheny Image Factory’s productions contribute significantly to the local economy. The company’s projects generate direct spending in communities like Marion County, covering expenses such as meals, lodging, transportation, actor salaries, and set construction. A film with a $2 to $2.5 million budget typically results in $600,000 to $700,000 in direct spending within the community .
