Matthew Hayden, a former Australian cricket legend, has criticized the national selectors for recalling Nic Maddinson to the Test squad, calling the decision a “pile of mediocrity” and accusing them of “disrespecting first class cricket.” Maddinson, 34, was unexpectedly added to Australia’s team for the upcoming series against South Africa, a move that has sparked controversy. The decision came as the squad faces an injury crisis, with Josh Inglis and Cameron Green sidelined, and includes Maddinson alongside keeper-batter Sam Harper, who earned his spot after scoring a century in a recent tour game. Hayden Condemns Selection as ‘Disrespectful’

Matthew Hayden Unloads On Selectors: "You Are Friggin' Dreaming"

Hayden, 54, launched a scathing attack on the selectors, accusing them of prioritizing mediocrity over merit. “Where we are at is that we are promoting the greatest pile of mediocrity that we’ve seen in a generation of cricket,” he said on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast. He criticized the decision to call up Maddinson, who has not played a first-class match since March 2025 and has a Test average of 37.11, arguing that players averaging 45 or higher should be prioritized. “You are frigging dreaming” if selectors expect Maddinson to perform at a higher level, Hayden said. He also accused the selectors of undermining first-class cricket, stating, “You are disrespecting first class cricket. Absolutely dead set you are.”

Bailey Defends Decision, Calls Maddinson a ‘Top Talent’

George Bailey, chairman of the selection panel, defended the move, asserting that Maddinson’s ability “stacks up as well as anyone’s” when he is at his best. “If people are trying to run down a list of last year’s run scorers, that’s going to be a challenge for them,” Bailey said. He dismissed concerns about Maddinson’s lack of recent first-class cricket, noting that the player was not “sitting out because he said the wickets looked green or too challenging.” Bailey also highlighted that Maddinson’s inclusion came alongside Harper, who earned his spot through performance, and emphasized that the decision was not about “disrespecting state cricket.”

Other Players Left Fuming

The selection has drawn frustration from players competing in India with the Australia A squad, including Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas, and Campbell Kellaway, who had hoped to break into the Test team. Fast bowler Ryan Harris called the decision a “kick in the guts” for Shield players, though he acknowledged Maddinson’s talent. Meanwhile, the selectors’ plan to recall Mitch Marsh, despite his retirement from Sheffield Shield cricket, has further fueled criticism. The series against South Africa begins Friday, with the squad now set to face the challenge of balancing experience and unproven talent.
