McDonald’s Employee Suffers Severe Burns After Coworker Allegedly Throws Hot Oil in Yuba City
A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee in Yuba City, California, is recovering in the UC Davis ICU after suffering burns across his face, neck, arm, and back following an alleged attack by a coworker, according to NBC affiliate KCRA. Jacob Smith, who remains hospitalized, was reportedly attacked on May 30 when a colleague threw hot oil on him while he was counting money in the office.
Details of the Incident
Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, told KCRA that the attack occurred as her son was preparing to leave work. “He was in the office getting ready to count the money when he saw out of the corner of his eye something, and he turned, and the oil was just thrown on him,” she said. The suspect, identified by Yuba City police as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, fled the scene but was arrested the following day by Sutter County deputies.
Bluett, who is no longer employed by the McDonald’s, has been charged with felony battery with serious bodily injury, felony mayhem, and felony assault with a deadly weapon. He has pleaded not guilty, according to court records. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and Bluett’s public defender has not yet commented.
Legal Charges and Response
Online court records confirm that Bluett faces multiple felony charges in connection with the incident. John Cook, the owner of the Yuba City McDonald’s, issued a statement expressing concern for Smith’s well-being. “The serious incident that took place at our restaurant… is deeply concerning, and our focus is on supporting our employee, Jacob, as he recovers,” Cook said. He emphasized that the safety of employees and the community remains a top priority.
Smith’s injuries include severe burns on one side of his face, down his neck, and across his back. His mother described the pain as “excruciating” and noted that doctors are working to minimize the need for extensive skin grafting. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support his medical expenses, according to the platform.
Community and Workplace Impact
The incident has sparked conversations about workplace safety and employee well-being at McDonald’s locations. While the company has not released a public statement beyond Cook’s remarks, the case highlights the risks faced by workers in fast-food environments. Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, though no additional details have been disclosed.
As the legal process unfolds, Smith’s recovery remains a focal point for his family and the broader community. The case underscores the importance of addressing workplace conflicts and ensuring measures are in place to prevent such violence.
