Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, told KCRA that the attack occurred as her son was preparing to leave work. “He was in the office getting ready to count the money when he saw out of the corner of his eye something, and he turned, and the oil was just thrown on him,” she said. The suspect, identified by Yuba City police as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett, fled the scene but was arrested the following day by Sutter County deputies.

Bluett, who is no longer employed by the McDonald’s, has been charged with felony battery with serious bodily injury, felony mayhem, and felony assault with a deadly weapon. He has pleaded not guilty, according to court records. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and Bluett’s public defender has not yet commented.
