McDonald’s Receives Approval for Second Letterkenny Restaurant Despite Local Objection
Letterkenny, Ireland – February 16, 2026 – An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted planning permission for a second McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru in Letterkenny, County Donegal. The new outlet will be developed by local property developer PJ McDermott and will be located beside Rossview Business Park and the Polestar Roundabout.
Objection and Appeal
The approval comes despite an objection lodged by local businessman Eddie Tobin, who raised concerns regarding traffic management and the aesthetic design of the proposed building. Tobin argued that the site’s proximity to the Polestar Roundabout would create traffic issues, potentially leading vehicles to turn into private properties due to the lack of a dedicated right-turn lane. He also criticized the proposed traffic management system and deemed the building’s design lacking in “architectural quality.”
Planning Process and Conditions
Donegal County Council initially approved the development in August, subject to 19 conditions, including limiting operating hours to between 8:00 AM and 11:00 PM. Although, Tobin’s subsequent appeal to An Coimisiún Pleanála caused a delay in the project. An Coimisiún Pleanála ultimately rejected the appeal on February 11th, granting conditional planning permission subject to 20 conditions.
Development Details
The construction of the new McDonald’s will necessitate the demolition of an existing two-story house and a single-story commercial building. The existing McDonald’s restaurant on Pearse Road will remain operational, and the company plans to optimize service vehicle logistics by servicing both locations on a single route.
