McIlroy and Bridgeman Share Lead at Rain-Affected Genesis Invitational
Rory McIlroy and Jacob Bridgeman are tied for the lead after the first round of the Genesis Invitational, navigating a challenging day of rain, wind, and a three-hour weather delay at Riviera Country Club. Both players carded a five-under-par 66.
A Day of Difficult Conditions
The opening day of the tournament was marked by unpredictable weather, forcing a suspension of play. McIlroy demonstrated resilience, saving par on the sixth hole with a skillful chip over a bunker. He finished the day with only one dropped shot.
Bridgeman Makes a Strong Debut
Jacob Bridgeman, making his debut at the Genesis Invitational, matched McIlroy’s score of 66. He recorded four birdies on the back nine, including a crucial birdie at the 17th, and finished with a par on the 18th. This performance marks his highest ranking, 52nd, since turning professional four years ago.
Rai in Contention
Aaron Rai was also in contention, positioned at six-under par through 16 holes when play was suspended due to darkness. Play is set to resume Friday morning.
Scheffler Struggles
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler faced a difficult start, finishing tied for last at five-over par through 10 holes.
McIlroy Adapts to the Elements
McIlroy reflected on his ability to handle the challenging conditions, stating, “I’ve started to just really enjoy this style of golf.” He noted a shift in mindset over the past decade, allowing him to better control his ball flight and succeed in difficult weather. He added, “I wouldn’t say I enjoy them, but I can certainly handle them better.”
Lowry Faces Challenges
Shane Lowry had a more difficult day, posting a two-over-par 73. He struggled on the front nine with three bogeys, but managed to recover with birdies on the ninth and tenth holes. A three-putt on the 12th brought his score back to two-over par, leaving him tied for 54th.
