Challenging Conditions at Riviera
The opening day of the tournament presented golfers with a significant test, as heavy rain led to a three-hour stoppage, followed by strong and cold wind gusts. McIlroy noted the rain was actually preferable to the wind, stating, “The rain.”
McIlroy’s Resilient Performance
Despite the challenging conditions, McIlroy demonstrated resilience, birdying twice in his first three holes before the rain delay. He continued to play steadily after the resumption of play, saving par on several challenging holes, including a chip from the putting surface on the sixth. McIlroy has expressed a shift in mindset regarding challenging conditions, stating, “I’ve started to just really enjoy this style of golf. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I didn’t enjoy these conditions, but it’s been a shift in mindset and maybe just a continuation of trying to build upon the skill set that I have. Then when it does get to conditions like this, I’m a lot more prepared.”
Other Notable Performances
Alongside McIlroy and Bridgeman, England’s Marco Penge is well-positioned at three under with nine holes remaining in his opening round. World number one Scottie Scheffler, however, faced a difficult start, sitting at the bottom of the 72-man field with five over par through eight holes.

The 2026 Genesis Invitational marks the 100th playing of the tournament at the legendary Riviera Country Club. Thirty players will return on Friday at 7:00 AM (15:00 GMT) to complete their first rounds.
