Jakarta on Alert for Measles Surge Ahead of Eid al-Fitr
Jakarta, Indonesia – March 11, 2026 – The Jakarta Provincial Government is increasing vigilance against a potential rise in measles cases as the Eid al-Fitr holiday approaches. While Jakarta has currently reported zero confirmed cases of measles, authorities are closely monitoring the situation due to a rising trend in surrounding areas.

The Jakarta Health Agency is raising public awareness and tightening precautionary measures in response to increasing measles cases in Jakarta’s buffer zones. Head of the Jakarta Health Agency, Ani Ruspitawati, stated that the agency is actively monitoring the situation through a surveillance system implemented across various health facilities.
Surveillance and Testing Protocols
According to Ruspitawati, if a patient exhibits symptoms of measles, immediate laboratory examination will be conducted to confirm the diagnosis. Currently, no cases have been identified within Jakarta itself, but surrounding areas are experiencing a rise in infections.
Children Most Vulnerable to Infection
Health officials emphasize that children, particularly babies and toddlers, are the most vulnerable group due to their developing immune systems. Ruspitawati urged the public to avoid close contact, such as touching or kissing, with young children to minimize the risk of transmission. “The most vulnerable group are children. So, we must really protect babies and children,” she explained.
Immunization and Pandemic Impact
While a mass immunization program is not currently underway due to the absence of active cases in Jakarta, the Health Agency is focusing on close public health monitoring. Authorities suspect that the potential resurgence of measles cases may be linked to disruptions in vaccination coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic, where achieving 100% immunization rates proved challenging in many areas.
Health Checks at Transportation Hubs
In preparation for the anticipated increase in travel during Eid al-Fitr, the DKI Jakarta Health Office is preparing health check posts at bus terminals and other transportation hubs. These posts, typically operational seven days before and after Eid, will be staffed with medical personnel to screen bus drivers for health risks, including blood pressure, blood sugar and potential drug use.
