Measles outbreaks Surge Globally, Sudan Crisis Exacerbates Risk
december 19, 2025 – A concerning rise in measles cases is being observed worldwide, with a notably acute risk in conflict zones like Sudan. The situation underscores the critical importance of vaccination and robust immunization programs, yet these are increasingly threatened by funding shortfalls and logistical challenges.
Recent reports indicate a dramatic increase in measles outbreaks. In 2024, 59 countries experienced large, disruptive outbreaks – nearly three times the number reported in 2021, which was already the highest number recorded since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic [1]. This surge is attributed to declining vaccination rates, leaving populations vulnerable to infection.
The crisis in Sudan is considerably worsening the situation. While vaccination campaigns were conducted in the Jebel Marra region of Central Darfur in June 2024, large areas including Zalingei, South Darfur, and West Darfur were left uncovered [2]. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are now witnessing a sharp increase in measles cases in these neglected regions, alongside outbreaks of diphtheria and pertussis – all preventable through vaccination.
“What is urgently needed now is for the Ministry of Health-with the support of health partners, including UNICEF-to resume routine immunization and ensure sufficient vaccine supplies,” stated Ahmed Fadel, MSF emergency coordinator in Darfur.”Countless lives could be saved, yet after more than two and a half years of war, the world continues to fail the people of Sudan.” [2]
The global response to measles prevention is hampered by significant funding cuts. The global Measles and Rubella Laboratory Network, crucial for disease surveillance and outbreak response, has experienced reduced financial support, as have national immunization programs in many countries [3]. These cuts threaten to widen immunity gaps and fuel further outbreaks.
The World Health Institution (WHO) emphasizes that measles is one of the most contagious human infections, but it is almost entirely preventable through vaccination. A two-dose measles vaccine is highly effective [4]. Maintaining high vaccination coverage is essential to protect communities and prevent the resurgence of this risky disease.
Efforts are underway to address the crisis, but sustained funding and coordinated international action are vital to prevent further suffering and loss of life.
