Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician performs laboratory tests, ensures the accuracy of results, and reports findings to Pathologists and other Clinicians. This role is vital for accurate diagnoses and effective patient treatment plans.
Job Description: Essential Responsibilities
- Perform start-up, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures on laboratory instruments and equipment, adhering to established protocols. This includes quality control (QC) and calibration, as well as data entry and assessment.
- Prepare specimens for examination and perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunological, microscopic, and bacteriological tests.
- Utilize automated equipment and instruments capable of performing tests simultaneously, analyzing samples for content or other properties.
- Conduct tests for electrolytes, enzymes, and drug levels in blood samples. Examine blood and other fluids for normal and abnormal cells, counting cells using a microscope.
- Make cultures of body fluids and tissue samples to identify the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and other organisms.
- Type and crossmatch blood samples for transfusions and prepare blood products for transfusion.
- Evaluate test results, enter data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and report findings to clinicians, ensuring accuracy.
- Perform venipunctures, including blood culture collection, and fingersticks, adhering to proper identification and labeling procedures, and utilizing vein preservation techniques.
- Stay current with advancements in laboratory medicine through mandatory and voluntary continuing education, competency testing, and Quality Assurance programs.
- Run and evaluate results for mandated College of American Pathologists (CAP) Proficiency Testing Samples.
- Participate in the evaluation of new methods, procedures, and instruments, and write and maintain technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for accuracy and regulatory compliance, under the guidance of the Medical Technologist Leader, Clinical Manager, and Pathologist.
- Assist in the training of other staff members.
- Maintain adequate supplies for all perform areas, assisting with inventory assessment to ensure sufficient reagents and supplies are available for patient testing.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree required.
- 0-1 years of related work experience required.
- Experience with computer systems, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access).
Preferred Qualifications
- Clinical laboratory experience.
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certification.

Physical Nature of the Job
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. The job involves some sedentary elements but requires standing and movement throughout the hospital campus.
Pay Range
$37.00 – $49.80 per hour
Compensation is determined based on factors including seniority, education, experience, certifications, work location, and job responsibilities, and may exceed the base hourly rate with shift differentials, call pay, and overtime.
