If you have trouble sleeping, many people turn to melatonin supplements. But this could be risky. A new study warns against using the “natural” sleep hormone long-term, especially concerning your heart health.

Melatonin is frequently enough seen as a gentle way to ease restless nights and help you fall asleep. You can easily buy it at drugstores and pharmacies without a prescription.millions use it, believing they’re doing something good for their bodies.

Though, a recent study presented at the American Heart Association (AHA) meeting in New Orleans challenges this belief. Long-term melatonin use may harm your body and increase your risk of heart failure and even death.

Researchers at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York analyzed the health data of over 130,000 US patients for five years. All participants had insomnia – chronic sleeplessness. Medical records showed about half had taken melatonin for at least a year.
