Mother Pleads Not Guilty in Daughter’s Murder
Ashlee Buzzard, 40, of Lompoc, California, appeared in court Friday adn pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of her 9-year-old daughter, Melodee. The charge includes a special allegation.
buzzard is being held without bail. Her attorney stated she also denied allegations that the murder was premeditated.
Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. This case has drawn meaningful attention, especially from Melodee’s family.
Melodee’s body was discovered on December 6th in a rural area of Wayne County, Utah. A couple found her remains while taking photographs. Sheriff Bill Brown confirmed the cause of death was gunshot wounds to the head.
FBI DNA analysis positively identified the body as Melodee Buzzard. The discovery came more than two months after she was reported missing.
“Maternal filicide is rare and always difficult to comprehend,” sheriff Brown stated. “This level of criminal activity is heartbreaking.”
Lilly Denes, Melodee’s paternal grandmother, expressed outrage at the not-guilty plea to reporters outside the courthouse.The case continues to unfold, and further details are expected as the prosecution prepares its case.
