Melvin Novotny Commits to UMass Amherst Hockey Program
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst has announced the commitment of Swedish forward Melvin Novotny to its hockey program, marking a significant addition to the Minutemen roster. The 2007-born skater, currently affiliated with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL, is set to join the NCAA program for the 2026-27 season, following a successful junior career in Sweden.
Novotny’s Junior Career and NHL Recognition
Novotny, a native of Täby, Sweden, gained attention during the 2024-25 season with Leksands IF’s J20 team, where he recorded 12 goals and 36 assists in 41 regular-season games. His performance earned him a selection by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, with the 195th overall pick in the seventh round. While he remains unsigned by an NHL team, his commitment to UMass underscores his transition to collegiate hockey.
“Melvin’s playmaking ability and offensive instincts make him a valuable asset to our program,” said UMass hockey coach John Hynes. “His experience in elite junior leagues will help elevate our team’s competitiveness.”
Path to UMass and Future Prospects
Before joining the Minutemen, Novotny will continue his development with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the USHL, a key stepping stone for players transitioning to NCAA hockey. His decision to attend UMass aligns with the university’s reputation for producing skilled athletes, supported by the program’s resources and academic opportunities.

UMass Amherst, a top-50 public university according to the Princeton Review, has consistently ranked among the best value colleges in the nation. The university’s hockey program, part of the Hockey East conference, has a history of developing talent for professional leagues and international competitions.
Contextualizing the Commitment
The announcement comes as UMass continues to strengthen its athletic offerings, reflecting broader investments in student-athletes. The university’s emphasis on both academic and athletic excellence positions it as a competitive destination for prospects like Novotny, who balance high-level sports with rigorous academic pursuits.
As the 2026-27 season approaches, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Novotny’s skills translate to the collegiate stage. His commitment highlights the growing importance of the NCAA as a pipeline for hockey talent, with UMass positioning itself as a key player in this ecosystem.
For now, the Minutemen await the next chapter in Novotny’s journey, confident in his potential to contribute to the team’s success while pursuing his academic goals at UMass Amherst.
