WASHINGTON – Teh Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Marco Peronaci, and the President of the Committee for the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence, Rosie Rios, signed a Memorandum of understanding at villa Firenze. This agreement formalizes cooperation between Italy and the United States on joint initiatives related to the 250th anniversary of American independence.

“Italy wants to celebrate this vital anniversary in 2026 and the friendship that binds us to the United States by participating in next year’s celebrations with an ‘Italian program‘: a cycle of events and proposals that highlight the contribution our country and the Italian-American community have made to the construction of the identity of the united States, from the history of emigration to contributions in the cultural, scientific, and social fields,” declared the Ambassador.

As announced by the Ambassador, the Italian program for America 250 will begin in January 2026 with an event dedicated to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Italy-United States memorandum for the protection of cultural heritage. This memorandum was renewed in Rome on December 5th by the minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, and Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Rogers.

The program will also include initiatives in music – with the involvement of Maestro Gianandrea Noseda, Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) of Washington – and in cinema, science, and in-depth studies dedicated to key figures in the path towards American independence, such as Filippo Mazzei. A highlight will be an exhibition of Roman statues dedicated to Emperor Trajan and the enduring impact of Roman civilization on the contemporary world.

these initiatives will be carried out in collaboration with partners, including the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF). Following the agreement signing ceremony, a multi-voice conversation on the relationship between the two countries took place.
