Memphis Grizzlies’ Underrated Trade Asset Revealed

Enterprise IT security faces a growing structural vulnerability as organizations increasingly struggle with basic asset visibility, unpatched legacy systems, and fragmented vulnerability management tools, according to recent research from Arctic Wolf. Dan Schiappa, President of Technology and Services at Arctic Wolf, reports that across more than 800,000 analyzed IT assets, one in three lacks at least one critical security control, nearly one in five runs end-of-life software, and 17% sit completely outside traditional vulnerability management tools.

The Visibility Gap in Enterprise IT Environments

Modern corporate networks span distributed ecosystems that include on-premises infrastructure, cloud services, SaaS applications, remote endpoints, and third-party integrations. According to Arctic Wolf data, each layer is typically managed by different tools that maintain isolated inventories without offering a unified view. This fragmentation causes assets to fall outside patch cycles, leave devices unprotected by endpoint protection, and push entire systems outside active vulnerability scanning.

Organizations cannot secure what they cannot see. When 17% of IT assets lack coverage from vulnerability management tools, those assets become invisible from a security standpoint. This creates execution gaps rather than sophisticated zero-day risks. Data shows that every one of the top 10 most frequently exploited vulnerabilities in recent incident response cases had already received patches from vendors, often months before exploitation occurred.

Legacy Systems and Remote Access Exposure

Legacy technology compounds enterprise risk. According to Arctic Wolf research, 19% of IT assets run software or hardware that has reached end-of-life status and no longer receives security updates. These legacy systems are frequently embedded in critical processes across sectors like healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services, making immediate replacement difficult. Companies often believe older systems have been decommissioned, only to discover active instances running in the background and creating persistent blind spots.

Simultaneously, remote access vectors remain a primary entry point for attackers. Arctic Wolf findings indicate that 65% of incidents involve the abuse of remote access services, including VPNs, RDP, and remote management tools. Rather than outpacing defenders through advanced technological innovation, attackers repeatedly exploit known foundational components and unapplied patches due to poor asset prioritization.

Regulatory Pressures and Compliance Demands

For businesses operating in the United Kingdom, these visibility challenges carry direct regulatory consequences. Frameworks such as the Network and Information Systems (NIS2) Regulations and the UK’s forthcoming Cyber Security and Resilience Bill place heavy emphasis on demonstrable control over assets and risk. Inaccurate inventories and fragmented data make compliance difficult to prove, raising the stakes for IT leaders tasked with closing the gap between knowing about vulnerabilities and actually remediating them.
