Meningitis Outbreak in Kent: Student Shares Harrowing Experience

A recent outbreak of meningitis in Kent, England, has left a trail of serious illness, including a University of Kent law student, Annabelle Mackay, who experienced a rapid and frightening decline in health after attending a nightclub. The outbreak has prompted health officials to issue alerts and advise preventative measures.

The Outbreak and Initial Symptoms

As of March 20, 2026, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating 20 cases of meningitis in Kent, with nine cases confirmed including six cases of meningitis B (MenB). Tragically, two individuals have died as a result of the infection, including a University of Kent student and a nine-month-old baby currently in intensive care .

Annabelle Mackay, 21, began experiencing symptoms after visiting Club Chemistry in Canterbury on March 4, followed by a visit to ‘Venue’ where she shared drinks. She initially believed her symptoms were related to COVID-19 and tested negative. Her symptoms quickly escalated to include delirium, severe fatigue, fever, and a severe headache .

Delayed Response and Rapid Deterioration

After seeking advice from the NHS 111 helpline, Annabelle was initially advised to rest and drink fluids. However, her condition rapidly worsened. Her mother sensed something was wrong during a phone call and urged Annabelle’s housemates to seek immediate medical attention .

Within half an hour of being carried out of her house by her friends, Annabelle was unable to move or speak. She was rushed to a resuscitation unit in Margate Hospital, where she was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis .

A Harrowing Experience and Gratitude

Annabelle experienced temporary blindness and the loss of mobility. She expressed immense gratitude to her mother and housemates for their quick actions, stating she “would be dead if it wasn’t for my mum and housemates” . She also voiced her gratitude for her friends not following the advice given by the NHS 111 helpline .

Despite only spending less than an hour at Club Chemistry, and stating she was outside for most of the time, Annabelle acknowledges the venue as a potential source of infection .

Public Health Response

The UKHSA has issued an alert to the NHS across England regarding the signs and symptoms of meningitis. Individuals who visited Club Chemistry on March 5, 6, and 7 are being urged to seek preventative antibiotic treatment as a precautionary measure .

The NHS has stated that 111 call handlers are trained to identify patients with priority symptoms and escalate responses when necessary .
