The Canadian team was playing a second match in as many days at the Olympic Games. This time, it was Logan Thompson who got the start after Jordan Binnington’s shutout the day before.
Connor McDavid took charge by scoring a goal and two assists to help Canada defeat Switzerland 5-1. From the start of the match, McDavid hit the target on the power play and the Canadian delegation was never really worried, despite good Swiss opposition. Thomas Harley, Macklin Celebrini, Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon also scored in this game. Pius Suter was the only scorer for Switzerland, which lost for the first time in the tournament.
Canada is therefore perfect after two matches and takes a serious option for first position in Group A. The team will play its third and final match of the preliminary round against France next Sunday.
In the other meeting of Group A, Czechia had a little scare against France. David Pastrnak, Martin Necas, Michal Kempny and Matej Stransky each had a goal and an assist in a 6-3 victory. Despite total domination by the Czechs, the score was 3-2 in favor of France halfway through the match. However, the Czech Republic picked up the pace in the third period.
In group B
Earlier this morning, in Group B, Finland faced Sweden, while Juraj Slafkovsky’s Slovakia faced Italy.
After a difficult first match at the curtain-raiser, Finnish goalkeeper Juuse Saros recovered well by blocking 34 of the Swedes’ 35 shots, leading his team to a 4-1 victory. Nikolas Matinpalo, Anton Lundell, Joel Armia and Mikko Rantanen, the latter in an empty net, moved the strings for Finland. Rasmus Dahlin was Sweden’s only scorer. Although the score does not necessarily reflect the course of the match, the Swedes have had a rather ordinary start to the tournament, with a much more difficult victory than expected against Italy followed by a first defeat.
Speaking of Italy, the Olympic host country once again put up a good fight against Slovakia, but lost again by a score of 3-2. For the Slovak side, this is a second victory in as many matches. Libor Hudacek, Matúš Sukel and Adam Ruzicka scored in the match. Juraj Slafkovsky collected an assist on his team’s first goal.
