History and Founding

The town of Mentone was founded in the late 1800s by John Mason [3]. In 1884, Dr. Frank Caldwell, the builder of the Mentone Springs Hotel, requested that Mason name the town. Mason’s daughter, Alice, named it Mentone after the French city of Menton, meaning “Musical Mountain Spring” [3]. The area was originally known as Ellison’s Precinct, named after a Mr. Ellison who operated a grist mill there. The first house in Mentone was built around 1854 by Robert Vernon [3]. It is now St. Joseph’s-on-the-Mountain Episcopal Church.

Mentone was incorporated in 1935 [1]. In April 2003, the town was near the epicenter of a magnitude 4.6 earthquake, which was felt across several states but caused only minor damage [1]. The area is part of the Ridge and Valley region of the southwestern Appalachian Mountains.

It covers a total area of 4.30 square miles, with 4.29 square miles being land and 0.012 square miles being water [1].
