Mercedes-Benz Celebrates 140 Years of Automotive Innovation with Updated S-Class

This year, Mercedes-Benz commemorates 140 years since the creation of the first automobile – the Benz Patent-Wagen – with a significant evolution of its flagship S-Class model. Known for setting trends in the luxury automotive sector, Mercedes-Benz has consistently pushed technological boundaries, often integrating innovations into mainstream vehicles years later.

A Legacy of Innovation

The current generation (W223) S-Class, launched in 2021, has undergone the most extensive modernization within a single generation in its history. Over 50 percent of the car’s components – approximately 2,700 parts – have been either developed or redesigned. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen, built in 1885 by Karl Benz, is widely regarded as the first practical automobile and was the first car put into production [1]. Bertha Benz, Karl’s wife, further demonstrated its feasibility with a long-distance journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim in 1888 [2].

Exterior Design Enhancements

The most noticeable changes are at the front of the vehicle, starting with the redesigned headlights. These feature the new DIGITAL LIGHT system, incorporating a light signature in the form of three-pointed stars, becoming a signature element across the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. The headlights also boast a 40% increase in luminosity, illuminating the road up to 600 meters, and a modular design intended to reduce repair costs.

The radiator grille has been slightly enlarged, with a filling comprised of tiny stars. The star on the hood is now illuminated, though this feature is currently limited to the US and China markets due to local regulations. The rear lights also reflect the star motif. Updated wheel designs, including prototype wheels focused on aerodynamic efficiency, are also available.

Personalization and Interior Refinements

Mercedes-Benz continues to emphasize individualization, offering classic, AMG, and Maybach versions of the S-Class. The Manufaktur program expands personalization options with over 150 paint shades and 400 interior variants. The “Manufaktur Made to Measure” program allows for even more unique combinations, created in collaboration with experts at the Center of Excellence in Sindelfingen, Germany.

A notable interior update is the introduction of the MBUX Superscreen, integrating three displays – for the driver, infotainment, and passenger – across the dashboard. This new hardware is accompanied by redesigned software incorporating artificial intelligence elements, including ChatGPT and Microsoft services.

Responding to user feedback, Mercedes-Benz has reintroduced analog buttons on the steering wheel, addressing concerns about the previous touch controls.

Engine and Chassis Technology

Gasoline variants feature modified turbochargers, even as the eight-cylinder units have been further developed with a flat crankshaft, previously exclusive to AMG models. An optional swiveling rear axle, capable of turning the wheels by up to 10°, enhances maneuverability. The E-Active Body Control system, an active chassis with intelligent damper control, utilizes sensors, cameras, and cloud data to predict and respond to road irregularities.

Looking Ahead

The modernized S-Class demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation, even within established models. As the company celebrates 140 years of automotive history, the updated S-Class serves as a technological showcase, paving the way for future advancements across the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
