Mercyhurst University President Kathleen Getz to Retire, Challenges Students to Support Special Olympics
Mercyhurst University President Kathleen Getz announced her retirement, effective June 30, 2026, concluding a 35-year career in higher education and five years of leadership at the Erie, Pennsylvania, institution . In a unique fundraising initiative, President Getz has challenged the Mercyhurst Student Government to raise at least $500 for Special Olympics Pennsylvania. if successful, she will participate in the annual Polar Plunge.
Polar Plunge Challenge and Support for Special Olympics
The Polar Plunge is Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s largest annual fundraiser, with thousands of participants braving freezing temperatures to support the organization’s mission. Funds raised provide year-round sports training and competition opportunities for over 15,000 athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities . Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics fosters inclusion and provides athletes with confidence, leadership skills and a sense of community.
Mercyhurst’s Commitment to Service
Mercyhurst University’s involvement in the Polar Plunge reflects its dedication to service and community engagement. This year, the university aims to surpass its previous fundraising efforts and secure the top spot in the university challenge, with a goal of raising over $25,000 .
Event Details and How to Participate
The Mercyhurst Polar Plunge will be held on Tuesday, April 7, from 1 to 5 p.m. At Trinity Green. Participants will plunge into the Bear Force One mobile pool. Individuals can register online at https://give.specialolympicspa.org/event/2026-mercyhurst-bear-force-one-university-challenge/e745973, join or create a team, and fundraise with friends and family.
Incentives are offered for fundraising milestones: a sweatshirt for raising at least $50 (students) or $75 (non-students), and both a sweatshirt and a Polar Plunge blanket for raising $250 or more.

Dr. Getz’s Legacy at Mercyhurst
Dr. Kathleen Getz became the 13th president of Mercyhurst University in July 2021 . During her tenure, she oversaw significant achievements, including the launch of six modern Centers for Engagement, a transition to NCAA Division I athletics, and the university’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places . Dr. David Livingston has been appointed as the interim president, effective July 1, 2026 .
