Merlin Taps Dan Nevin to Lead Industry Relations

Nevin is charged with strengthening ties between the organization and independent trade associations, while spearheading membership development across emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

Expanding the Independent Footprint

Representing thousands of independent record labels and distributors, Merlin currently accounts for approximately 15% of the global recorded music market. Nevin’s primary mandate involves membership acquisition and the design of new initiatives. These programs are intended to assist smaller independent businesses in managing the complexities of Merlin’s digital licensing network.

Expanding the Independent Footprint

Merlin CEO Charlie Lexton, to whom Nevin reports, described the appointment as an essential step in ensuring independent voices remain represented as the music industry evolves. “As we continue to evolve, it’s essential that we build ever stronger relationships around the world, ensuring independent voices are represented wherever the future of music is being shaped,” Lexton said in a statement.

A Career Rooted in Independent Advocacy

Nevin brings over two decades of experience to the role. His career is deeply tied to the independent sector, most notably as the CEO of the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) from 2014 to 2016. Before relocating to the United Kingdom a decade ago, he also served as the digital music manager for major Australian retailer JB Hi-Fi.

Since moving to London, Nevin has operated as an independent consultant, advising a variety of labels, distributors, and music companies. Nevin noted that he has been connected to Merlin since its early years and intends to focus on creating value for both current members and the next generation of independent rightsholders.
