Meta Ireland Announces Job Cuts Amid AI Restructuring

Approximately 15 positions at Meta’s Irish operations are at risk as the company continues to restructure its workforce to prioritize artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. The cuts are separate from previously reported global layoff plans and are part of ongoing organizational changes.

AI-Driven Restructuring at Meta Ireland

The job cuts, impacting around 15 employees, are directly linked to Meta’s increased adoption of AI technologies and the subsequent reshaping of teams, according to RTÉ and Irish Examiner. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in January that 2026 would be a pivotal year for AI integration, with investments in AI tools expected to “flatten teams,” meaning fewer personnel needed for certain tasks. He noted that projects previously requiring large teams could now be accomplished by single, highly skilled individuals.

Not Linked to Larger Layoff Reports

These cuts are distinct from earlier reports suggesting potential layoffs affecting 20% or more of Meta’s global workforce. The company has described those broader reports as “speculative,” as reported by RTÉ.

Meta’s History of Job Cuts in Ireland

This is not the first instance of Meta reducing its Irish workforce. In January 2025, the company announced redundancies impacting around 5% of its “lowest performing” staff globally, affecting Irish-based employees. Prior to that, Meta cut approximately 840 jobs in Ireland through redundancies in November 2022 and May 2023.

Meta’s Global Workforce and Irish Presence

Meta currently employs around 1,800 people in Ireland, according to RTÉ. Globally, the company employs over 1,700 people in Ireland and 79,000 worldwide, as stated by the Irish Examiner. The company’s Irish employee numbers peaked at 2,662 in 2022, before declining to 1,738 in 2024.

A Meta spokesperson stated, “Teams across Meta regularly restructure or implement changes to ensure they’re in the best position to achieve their goals.” The spokesperson also added that the company is “finding other opportunities for employees whose positions may be impacted.”
