Meta is rolling out major productivity upgrades to its artificial intelligence assistant, allowing users to tap into personal calendars, coordinate event planning, and execute multi-step research projects. The update marks a distinct strategic shift for the tech giant, which previously positioned its conversational AI primarily around entertainment and social connection rather than workplace efficiency.
Meta AI Integrates Calendar and Planning Tools
The updated Meta AI assistant can now connect directly to user calendars to orchestrate schedules, pick optimal dates for gatherings, and generate recurring daily briefings without requiring constant re-prompting. According to company rollout details, users can set up automated workflows once—such as weekly meal planning or tracking product restocks—and leave the system to manage them. The tool also gains the ability to browse external platforms like Facebook Marketplace to locate specific items that fit within a defined budget, such as used furniture for a home renovation project.
These new task-management capabilities pit Meta directly against established conversational AI market leaders. Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Anthropic’s Claude have long emphasized productivity features, document analysis, and workflow automation.
Shifting Away From Pure Entertainment
The new capabilities represent a notable pivot from Meta’s earlier roadmap. Last year, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox informed employees that the primary goal for the company’s AI initiatives was to “focus on entertainment” and “connection with friends,” explicitly contrasting that approach with rivals who focused obsessively on productivity, as reported by journalist Alex Heath.
In addition to scheduling and shopping assistance, the upgraded assistant features improved web synthesis. The AI can aggregate information from multiple online sources and format the findings directly into comprehensive reports, presentations, or structured plans. Users can also dynamically steer the AI’s research direction mid-response, a conversational adjustment feature already common in competing platforms like ChatGPT.
Rollout Timeline and Availability
Meta’s updated AI assistant is rolling out to users in select markets via the standalone Meta AI app and the web interface. According to official company statements, the features will expand to additional countries and integrate into other company messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, in the coming weeks.
