Meta Accelerates AI-Driven Content Moderation and Launches AI Support Assistant
Meta Platforms is significantly expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance content moderation across Facebook and Instagram, whereas simultaneously rolling out an AI-powered support assistant to improve user experience. These moves reflect a broader industry trend toward leveraging AI to manage the complexities of online content and customer service.
Shifting Content Enforcement to AI
Over the next few years, Meta plans to transition content enforcement efforts from third-party vendors to its own AI systems. While human reviewers will still be involved, particularly for appeals, critical decisions, and law enforcement reports, AI will handle tasks better suited to technology, such as repetitive reviews of graphic content and combating evolving tactics used by malicious actors in areas like scams and illicit drug sales. AIToolly reported on this shift on March 19, 2026.
AI’s Demonstrated Effectiveness
Meta has been experimenting with AI in content enforcement for the past year, with promising results. The company reports that AI systems have identified 5,000 scam attempts daily that were missed by human teams, detected more instances of account impersonation, doubled the detection rate of adult sexual solicitation content, and prevented account takeovers by recognizing subtle clues. AI-driven interventions have reduced views of ads containing scams and other violations by 7%.
$14.3 Billion Investment in Scale AI
This increased reliance on AI is supported by Meta’s substantial $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, finalized in mid-2025, granting Meta a 49% non-voting stake in the company. MarketMinute highlights that this acquisition secures a critical resource for AI model training – high-fidelity human intelligence for Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). Scale AI founder, Alexandr Wang, has joined Meta as Chief AI Officer, leading the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs.
New AI-Powered Support Assistant
In addition to content moderation, Meta has launched an AI support assistant for Facebook and Instagram, previewed in December and now available on iOS, Android, and desktop. This assistant can answer questions about account issues and, with user permission, perform actions like reporting content, managing privacy settings, and resetting passwords. Meta claims the assistant responds to requests in under five seconds, significantly reducing wait times compared to traditional support methods.
Combating Scams and Advertiser Fraud
Meta is also proactively addressing scams and fraudulent activity. In March 2026, the company launched AI-powered anti-scam tools for Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Meta has initiated legal action against advertisers allegedly impersonating celebrities to defraud consumers.
Looking Ahead
Meta’s strategic investments and deployments of AI signal a long-term commitment to leveraging the technology for both safety and user experience. As AI systems continue to improve, Meta anticipates a transformation in its approach to content enforcement and customer support, allowing for more efficient and effective operations.
