Meta Replaces Third-Party Tech with Proprietary Image Generator

Meta has launched “Muse Spark Image,” a new image-generation model integrated into its AI chatbot and Instagram platform.

A Strategic Overhaul Under Zuckerberg

The rollout is the latest phase of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s effort to overhaul Meta’s AI capabilities. Since the April 2025 release of the Llama 4 large language model, Meta has scrambled to close performance gaps with rivals like OpenAI and Google. To accelerate this work, the company established a research group internally referred to as “TBD,” led by Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang.

A Strategic Overhaul Under Zuckerberg

Cutting Ties with Midjourney

Meta is actively winding down its multiyear, multibillion-dollar licensing deal with Midjourney. While Midjourney will continue to support some video generation features in the short term, Meta plans to replace those tools with its own “Muse Video” model, currently in development. This push to bring core development in-house is designed to justify the company’s massive capital expenditure on AI infrastructure. The strategy includes exploring a potential cloud-computing business to monetize surplus processing power, a prospect that recently triggered a nearly 9% rise in Meta’s share price.

Performance Benchmarks and Market Positioning

Unlike the “open” Llama models Meta previously released to developers, Muse Spark Image is a smaller, closed model. It is designed to process complex prompts using advanced reasoning, according to the company.

Independent rankings on the platform Arena suggest the model is competitive. Tester data indicates Muse Spark Image has outperformed models from Google and Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI in specific text-to-image and editing benchmarks. It still trails OpenAI’s GPT Image 2, released in April. While Meta has signaled plans to provide developers access via a private application programming interface (API), the company has repeatedly delayed the rollout.

At a Glance: The Meta AI Shift

  • Model Integration: Muse Spark Image is replacing third-party tools within Instagram and the Meta AI chatbot.
  • Shift in Development: The company is moving away from its reliance on Midjourney, favoring proprietary models developed by its “TBD” research team.
  • Strategic Pivot: Zuckerberg is under pressure to demonstrate the return on investment for Meta’s multi-billion dollar spending on AI infrastructure.
  • Performance: Independent benchmarks from Arena suggest the model is competitive with top-tier industry rivals but still trails OpenAI’s latest offerings in specific categories.
