Meta is testing robots from manufacturers including Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB inside its data centers to automate physical infrastructure tasks like cable plugging and server resets, according to company disclosures from August. The hardware automation push comes as the technology giant grapples with labor shortages for physical maintenance roles, though executives emphasize the machines are designed to fill operational gaps rather than displace human staff.
Internal estimates cited by the company suggest a specialized cable-handling robot could manage up to 80 percent of routine tasks in specific maintenance roles. Despite that potential, the deployment remains in an early exploratory phase. According to recent technical evaluations, current robotic systems operate significantly slower than human technicians and still require constant oversight. The hardware testing forms one pillar of a broader push to modernize data center upkeep using artificial intelligence and robotics.
Capital Expenditures and Financial Realities
The heavier emphasis on automated infrastructure coincides with a dramatic acceleration in Meta’s spending plans. The corporation raised its capital expenditure forecast for 2026 to a range of 130 bis 145 Milliarden US-Dollar, more than doubling its outlays from the previous year. While second-quarter revenue climbed 28 percent to 60,8 Milliarden US-Dollar, heavy spending weighed on cash generation. Free cash flow dropped sharply to $784 million, down from 8,55 Milliarden US-Dollar in the same period last year.
Financial pressures have accompanied large-scale structural shifts inside the company’s workforce. Meta carried out job cuts impacting roughly 8,000 employees—about 10 percent of its 75,000-person headcount—while simultaneously transitioning 7,000 workers into dedicated artificial intelligence roles. The workforce realignment followed internal planning scenarios under an initiative known as “Project OT,” which explored deeper structural reductions before executive leadership intervened to scale back targeted rollouts.
Operational Complexity and Legal Scrutiny
The rapid technological pivot has brought distinct operational hurdles. According to internal surveys cited in company reports, employee satisfaction dropped from 74 percent to 55 percent during the transition. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged execution missteps in June, noting that the development of autonomous AI agents has progressed more slowly than initially projected.
System metrics reflect the strain of accelerated code deployment. While automated AI code modifications surged by 220 percent year-over-year, technical incidents climbed by 40 percent, and the average time required to resolve those incidents increased by 70 percent. Legal challenges have compounded these operational pressures. A group of 26 former employees filed a lawsuit accusing Meta of utilizing an artificial intelligence platform during workforce reductions that allegedly disadvantaged workers with disabilities, raising ethical questions regarding automated human resources practices.
