Metaplanet CEO: Bitcoin is the Ultimate Opportunity for Asian Capital

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich stated at the Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong that Asian companies and households should capitalize on a changing regulatory landscape by moving capital into Bitcoin. Gerovich highlighted that Japanese households hold approximately $14 trillion in financial assets, with about half sitting in bank deposits earning minimal returns.

Shifting Capital Away from Cash Hoarding

Gerovich argued that traditional cash hoarding no longer makes financial sense for savers in Japan and across the wider region. The combination of ending cash-hoarding strategies and newly introduced regulatory frameworks creates a major market opportunity. Asian nations including Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore are actively adjusting regulations to support digital assets, unlocking deep pools of patient savings.

“Hoarding cash has stopped making sense, and every household in Japan can now feel it,” Gerovich said at the event. He noted that the region holds some of the deepest pools of patient savings on Earth, spanning Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia.

Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Treasury Strategy

Metaplanet pivoted from its hotel and technology business to establish a corporate bitcoin treasury model in 2024.

Gerovich shared that his company was small and going nowhere fast prior to adding bitcoin to its balance sheet. The corporate structure now offers regulated public market investors direct exposure to the digital asset. During his speech, he maintained confidence in current market direction, asserting that the price bottom for Bitcoin is already established and that incoming buyers represent long-term capital.

Future Outlook for Asian Digital Asset Markets

The Bitcoin Asia conference brought industry participants to Hong Kong to discuss corporate treasury implementation and infrastructure development. Pointing to prior market cycles driven largely by Western entities, Gerovich emphasized that the first Asian cycle has officially begun. He challenged regional institutions and enterprises to build local infrastructure.
