Meta released carousel creation inside its Edits app for iOS on October 7, 2026, allowing creators to blend photos and videos into a single project on a unified canvas before publishing directly to Instagram.
The update shifts how mixed-media posts are built by letting creators arrange standalone images and video clips side by side on one canvas instead of assembling them separately during the Instagram upload process. Still images and moving pictures can thus interact during the sequence assembly itself, rather than meeting only when uploaded to Instagram.
Project Setup and Canvas Layouts
Within the Edits app, the new format sits under the “Projects” tab by selecting the plus icon and choosing “carousel.” Creators pick multiple photos and videos to populate the workspace. Dan Moreno, Design Engineer in the Edits team, described the creators’ demand in PetaPixel with the words carousels came up again and again
.
A hypothetical project schedule demonstrates how different media types interact within the sequence. An initial slide holds a still photograph of a birthday cake, followed by a short video clip showing the cake being sliced, and a final image displaying the finished slice. The editor includes a plus button for adding empty slides, while swiping left from the last slide generates a new one automatically.
Tapping the options menu on any individual slide allows users to duplicate it, insert new slides before or after it, and rearrange the sequence on the fly.
Slide-Spanning Visuals and Editing Tools
The canvas removes strict visual borders between consecutive frames by letting a single photograph stretch across a slide edge into the next frame. A headline or text block can similarly span multiple slides, turning the dividing line into part of the visual composition. In the hypothetical cake storyboard, the opening photo could be cropped on the right and continue onto the following slide.
Editing utilities include scaling, rotation, and color adjustments to align image cutouts across boundaries. Individual slides also support internal layouts, custom spacing, filters, and sticker creation via a cutout tool. Creators can apply existing Edits presets for colors, audio, and text styles across the project.
Direct Instagram Publishing and Android Status
Once the layout is complete, creators can share the finished carousel directly to Instagram from within the Edits app or download it for later use. While the Edits application is available on Android devices, Meta has not yet released the carousel feature for Android users, and no release date has been announced.
