Meta’s Muse agent overtook OpenAI’s ChatGPT on the free app charts, part of a new craze over personal AI assistants. Muse operates across the internet to browse, click, type, and execute user commands without relying on OpenAI’s frontier models.
Meta’s Muse App Surges Past ChatGPT on Free Charts
Sensor Tower market intelligence data shows that Muse recorded more than 2.5 million mobile downloads in the 13 days following its launch. Seema Shah, vice president of insights at Sensor Tower, attributes the rapid adoption to the assistant’s simplicity, noting that it functions within a messenger-style window to handle work quickly while also answering general queries. Meta introduced Muse alongside smart glasses integration and a wearable gadget called Muse Charm during its Connect conference on Wednesday.

The application’s explosive growth demonstrates that consumer-facing AI tools can scale rapidly without depending on OpenAI infrastructure. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg oversees an ecosystem spanning more than 3 billion daily active users across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp, providing an immediate distribution network for the new assistant.
Competitive Pressure Mounts Across Silicon Valley
OpenAI’s dominant market position is facing simultaneous pressure from multiple technology companies releasing competing assistant tools. Alongside Meta’s Muse, the competitive field includes Instinct, a text-based assistant built by a startup; SpaceXAI’s Grok Bot; and Google’s Gemini Spark. Techsponential analyst Avi Greengart told Business Insider that each assistant launch reflects a broader industry trend where companies try to find a durable and monetizable way to use AI to improve daily life.
OpenAI product leader Thibault Sottiaux acknowledged the changing environment on social media by posting notifications from Muse, Instinct, and Grok Bot alongside the comment "it's enough" accompanied by a hand-wave emoji. While OpenAI achieved 1 billion weekly active users for ChatGPT this year, the company risks losing its status as a one-stop shop for consumer AI work.
OpenAI Prepares Counter-Strategy for Upcoming DevDay
OpenAI has not yet launched a direct functional equivalent to Muse, but industry expectations point toward an imminent response. Reports indicate that OpenAI is developing features specifically designed to compete with the new class of AI assistant apps ahead of its yearly DevDay conference. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X that he is excited for a major product release scheduled for the conference week.

Despite the initial download surge for new entrants, Sensor Tower insights indicate that long-term user retention remains the definitive metric for success. Seema Shah noted that while competitors are growing fast, chatbot engagement levels and user churn rates currently favor ChatGPT as the market leader in sustained usage.
