Metzeler, a name synonymous with high-performance motorcycle tires, boasts a rich history stretching back to 19th-century Germany. From its origins as a general rubber manufacturer to its current status as a Pirelli-owned brand with a global presence, Metzeler has consistently pushed the boundaries of tire technology. A History Rooted in German Innovation

Founded in 1863 in Munich, Germany, by Robert Friedrich Metzeler, the company initially focused on a broad range of rubber products. It wasn’t until 1892 that Metzeler entered the tire production market. A significant milestone arrived in 1933 with the creation of its first synthetic rubber tire, a pivotal advancement in tire technology. The company successfully navigated the challenges of World War II, rebuilding and resuming tire production for cars, trucks, and motorcycles after the war’s conclusion.

Ownership and Global Expansion

In 1986, Metzeler was acquired by Pirelli, a move that marked a new chapter in the company’s history. Today, Pirelli is partly Chinese-owned, with Sinochem holding a 34.1% controlling interest as of December 2025. Other significant shareholders include Italian holding company MTP S.p.A. Camfin (25.3%), institutional investors (36.6%), and retail investors (4%).

Manufacturing Locations: Germany and China

Metzeler currently operates two primary tire manufacturing facilities. One is located in its home country of Germany, in Brueburg. The other is in China, specifically in Yanzhou, Shandong province, where Pirelli as well manufactures some of its motorcycle tires.

Navigating Ownership Changes and Market Challenges

Metzeler’s ownership has experienced several transitions since the 1970s. In 1972, Bayer AG acquired a minority stake, eventually attempting a full takeover. The company restructured in 1978, strategically focusing solely on motorcycle tire production. The 2015 acquisition of a controlling stake in Pirelli by Chinese company ChemChina (later merged with Sinochem) has introduced potential challenges to Pirelli’s and Metzeler’s position in the U.S. Market, particularly concerning proposed bans on Chinese car technology and cybersecurity concerns.

A Reputation for Excellence

Despite these challenges, Metzeler tires maintain a strong reputation within the motorcycling community. Notably, the German motorcycle magazine Motorrad readers have consistently recognized Metzeler as the best tire brand. As of 2024, Metzeler had received this award 13 times, beginning in 2006 and most recently in 2024, with 62.3% of the 49,707 Motorrad readers who voted selecting Metzeler as their preferred motorcycle tire brand.
