Miami (Ohio) RedHawks Remain Undefeated, Led by Coach Travis Steele
The Miami University RedHawks basketball team is currently the last undefeated team in men’s college basketball, boasting a 27-0 record as of February 24, 2026. The team’s success is largely attributed to head coach Travis Steele, a Danville, Indiana native, and a roster built on strong relationships and intentional recruitment.
A Family Legacy and Intentional Team Building
Travis Steele, the son of a pig farmer, has guided the RedHawks to a 27-0 record, including a 14-0 mark in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Steele emphasizes the importance of player retention and building a team culture based on sacrifice and connection. “We have strong relationships,” Steele said. “We have players who have won before. They understand sacrifice. And we built this squad by being very, very intentional in what we’ve done. And I think that’s reflected on the court in the way our ball moves, the togetherness, the sacrifice, the connection on both sides of the field. That’s our superpower.”
Steele’s brother, John Groce, is the head coach at Akron, currently holding second place in the MAC, adding a familial competitive element to the conference landscape.
Offensive Prowess and Balanced Scoring
Miami (Ohio) has emerged as a top mid-major team, showcasing a balanced and high-scoring offense. The RedHawks average 92.3 points per game, the second-highest average nationally. Six players average double figures in scoring, with another averaging 9.9 points per game.
- Peter Suder: 14.6 points per game
- Brant Byers: 14.5 points per game
- Evan Ipsaro: 13.9 points per game
- Eian Elmer: 12.2 points per game
- Luke Skaljac: 10.6 points per game
- Almar Atlason: 10.5 points per game
Efficiency and Ball Control
The RedHawks lead the nation in field goal percentage (53.4%) and rank fourth in three-point shooting (40.3%). They also demonstrate strong ball control, averaging only 10.7 turnovers per game. Steele notes the team’s ability to adapt and execute, stating, “It’s hard to prepare…We don’t make a lot of plays. We make them on set pieces, so we play more fluidly, with a lot of space. Our guys know all the solutions.”
Upcoming Matchup Against Eastern Michigan
Miami (Ohio) will face Eastern Michigan (10-18, 4-11) on Tuesday. Despite Eastern Michigan’s struggling record and recent losing streak (nine losses in their last ten games), they are third in the MAC in points allowed per game (73.4). However, the Eagles struggle offensively, ranking 11th out of 13 teams in the MAC in scoring at 71.1 points per game. Mohammad Habhab leads Eastern Michigan in scoring with 14.3 points per game.
