Michael Iskander: From ‘House of David’ to Catholic Conversion

Michael Iskander, the Egyptian-born American actor best known for his portrayal of King David in the Amazon Prime Video series House of David (2025), has spoken openly about the role his faith plays in his life and career. He recently discussed how his faith guides him to respond to adversity with love, drawing inspiration from the biblical figure he portrays.

Finding Inspiration in King David

In a March 8th appearance on the Hallow prayer app podcast, hosted by Jeff Cavins, Iskander explained that the core tenets of his faith – loving God and loving one’s neighbor – inform his approach to challenging situations. He emphasized the importance of responding to evil with love, mirroring King David’s actions in the Bible. Specifically, he cited David’s decision to spare King Saul’s life on two occasions, despite having the opportunity for revenge. This example, Iskander shared, deeply inspires his personal life.

A Journey of Faith: Conversion to Catholicism

Iskander’s connection to the role of David extends beyond professional acting. On August 22nd, he publicly announced his conversion to Catholicism on Instagram, where he has over 54,000 followers. He described the decision not as an ending, but as “the beginning of a journey,” indicating a long-held calling to the Catholic faith.

Early Life and Career

Born in Egypt around 2001 or 2002, Iskander immigrated to the United States at the age of nine. He was raised in a faith-centered household and baptized into the Coptic Orthodox Church. He discovered his passion for performing arts in high school, initially through choir, and subsequently through participation in school musicals.

Before House of David, Iskander gained recognition for his performance as Usnavi in a high school production of In the Heights in 2019, earning the Spirit of the M.A.C.Y. Award for Best Actor and a Special Recognition Award at the Jimmy Awards. He made his Broadway debut in 2022, portraying Aaron Puckett in the Tony Award-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo.

House of David and Beyond

Iskander’s portrayal of King David in House of David, which premiered on Prime Video in 2025, has been praised for its emotional depth and sincerity. The series stars Iskander alongside Ali Suliman and Ayelet Zurer and explores the life of the biblical king, from shepherd to monarch. The show’s narrative touches on themes of desire and overcoming internal struggles, as highlighted in the official trailer (watch here).

For Michael Iskander, the role of King David has proven to be more than just a professional endeavor; it has become a significant influence on his personal and spiritual path.
