The two-hour primetime television special 9/11: United We Stand – 25 Years Later premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 1, on ABC, according to an announcement from ABC News. Led by Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan, the program explores how sports, music, Broadway, and comedy helped Americans find comfort, connection, and a path toward healing following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The project streams the day after its broadcast on Disney+ and Hulu.

The Cultural Recovery After September 11

While the history of the 2001 attacks is extensively documented, the cultural mechanisms that helped communities rebuild remain less explored in mainstream programming. According to ABC News, the upcoming documentary utilizes archival footage and personal interviews to examine how shared public experiences on athletic fields, theater stages, and television broadcasts restored a sense of normalcy and national resilience.

Michael Strahan reflected on returning to professional football shortly after the national tragedy. According to statements published by ABC News, Strahan noted that while football initially felt trivial amid immense loss, the return to the field provided a vital venue for collective grieving and support. “Football didn’t seem important. But when we returned to the field, I realized it was about more than the game,” Strahan stated.

Featured Participants and Production Details

The documentary features firsthand interviews with athletes, entertainers, journalists, and first responders who lived through the events. ABC News reports that the lineup of guests features former New York Giants player Victor Cruz, Tony Award-winner Matthew Broderick, comedian Pete Davidson, NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier, music icon Jon Bon Jovi, television host Jon Stewart, Tony and Emmy Award-winner Billy Crystal, Emmy Award-winning host Jimmy Fallon, ABC News chief global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz, MLB Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, and Good Morning America co-anchors George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts.
