Michele Tafoya Faces Tight Minnesota Senate Race While Awaiting National Republican Campaign Funds
Republican Senate candidate Michele Tafoya is locked in a competitive race against Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, reporting total assets between $10.7M to $37.9M while pressing national party leaders for financial backing. Despite high name recognition from a television sports broadcasting career and an opponent linked to state safety-net program fraud, Tafoya’s campaign has yet to secure commitments from Senate Republicans’ multimillion-dollar war chest.
Campaign Trail Stop in Le Sueur Highlights Agricultural Strains
During a campaign stop at a 4,000-acre family farm in Le Sueur on Monday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., praised Tafoya as a strong candidate with a convincing message for a state Republicans have largely surrendered. However, Thune remained noncommittal on deploying funds from the Senate Leadership Fund and allied groups, which Fox News reported in August had raised more than $500 million for the midterms. Thune cited a competitive national map that includes tough fights in Iowa, Alaska, and Kansas.
The joint appearance featured a private roundtable organized by the Minnesota Farm Bureau, where Thune and Tafoya promoted Republican work on a farm bill and pushed to legalize year-round E15 fuel. Farmers in the region have faced economic pressure from past federal trade friction and rising fuel costs driven by conflict with Iran, though the Minnesota Farm Bureau has endorsed Tafoya’s bid.

Contrasting Campaign Strategies on Fuel Prices and State Governance
Host farmer Matthew Pfarr adopted a neutral stance regarding political endorsements during Monday’s event. Pfarr noted that agricultural families are accustomed to weathering political and economic shifts regardless of which party holds power.
