Michigan Wolverines Lose Top 2027 Quarterback Recruit Peter Bourque
Ann Arbor, MI – The Michigan Wolverines experienced a setback in their 2027 recruiting class as four-star quarterback Peter Bourque has decommitted from the program, ESPN reported on Tuesday.
Bourque’s Background and Ranking
Bourque, a 6-foot-5 passer from Tabor Academy in Massachusetts, was ranked as ESPN’s No. 9 pocket passer and the No. 130 overall prospect in the 2027 class. He initially committed to Michigan in August 2025.
Factors Influencing the Decision
The decommitment comes amid a coaching change at Michigan. Former head coach Sherrone Moore was fired on December 10, 2025, due to issues stemming from an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Kyle Whittingham replaced Moore and subsequently overhauled the offensive staff, hiring former Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck. Bourque cited “uncertainty” as a key factor in his decision, according to Yahoo Sports and intends to take visits to other schools this spring.
Michigan’s Recruiting Landscape
Bourque’s departure leaves four-star defensive end Recarder Kitchen as Michigan’s lone top 300 commit in the 2027 class. The Wolverines had reportedly increased their efforts to recruit other 2027 quarterbacks, including Kamden Lopati, an Illinois commit and former Utah target, prior to Bourque’s decommitment.
Potential Suitors
Several programs are expected to pursue Bourque now that he has reopened his recruitment. Bleacher Report notes that Georgia, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Washington have all shown interest. Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina are also anticipated to be involved in his recruitment this spring.
Michigan’s Quarterback Situation
Despite losing Bourque, Michigan has a strong quarterback pipeline. Bryce Underwood, previously the top quarterback in the 2025 class, remains committed to the Wolverines and is expected to lead the team in 2026. Tommy Carr, the No. 22 quarterback in the 2026 class, is also set to join the program.
