Michigan Wolverines Dominate Howard Bison in March Madness Opener, 101-81

Buffalo, N.Y. — The University of Michigan Wolverines launched their 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament run with a decisive 101-81 victory over the Howard Bison on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at KeyBank Center. Despite a slow start, Michigan’s depth and second-half surge proved too much for the Bison, who were playing just two days after securing their first-ever March Madness win.

Johnson and Mara Lead the Way for Michigan

Morez Johnson Jr. Led the Wolverines with a perfect shooting night, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Aday Mara added 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists for Michigan, which improved to 32-3 on the season. Michigan’s performance marked the Big Ten regular-season record with 19 conference victories.

Howard Fights Hard, But Falls Short

Howard (24-11) put up a strong fight, led by Cam Gillus and Bryce Harris, who both scored 21 points, and Cedrick Taylor, who contributed 19 points and six rebounds. The Bison were coming off a historic 86-83 win over UMBC in the First Four, but couldn’t replicate that success against the top-seeded Wolverines. Howard’s 46 first-half points were the third-most scored by a No. 16 seed against a No. 1 seed in tournament history, and the most since 2004.

Second-Half Surge Seals the Victory

After a close first half, Michigan pulled away in the second half, building a 77-59 lead following a 3-pointer by Roddy Gayle Jr. Michigan shot 67.3% from the field overall and 69% in the second half, overwhelming Howard’s defense.

Looking Ahead

Michigan advances to the second round of the Midwest Region, where they will face the winner of the game between eighth-seeded Georgia (22-10) and ninth-seeded Saint Louis (28-5). Top-seeded teams in the NCAA Tournament now have a record of 160-2 against No. 16 seeds.

Game Highlights

  • Morez Johnson Jr.: 21 points, 10 rebounds (8-for-8 shooting)
  • Aday Mara: 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists
  • Cam Gillus (Howard): 21 points
  • Bryce Harris (Howard): 21 points
