The layoffs are concentrated within the Microsoft Commercial business and the Xbox gaming division. In the Commercial sector, the restructuring builds upon a previous “Frontier Company” announcement, aiming to embed engineering experts directly alongside customers to accelerate technology deployments.

Microsoft has stated that it is prioritizing the redeployment of staff into new roles where possible. According to Coleman’s internal communication, the company successfully moved more than 4,000 employees into new positions over the past year, with an additional 500 placements occurring this month.

For those whose roles are eliminated, Microsoft committed to providing financial support and resources to assist with their transition. The company also noted that more than 30% of eligible employees opted into a voluntary retirement program, a strategy the organization plans to continue exploring to reduce the necessity of involuntary job eliminations in the future.

Coleman stated that other parts of the business may face similar adjustments as the organization continues to align its investments with high-priority areas.
