Microsoft Cuts 4,800 Jobs in Global Restructuring
Microsoft is eliminating approximately 4,800 roles from its global workforce, a reduction representing about 2.1% of its total employees. The company confirmed the move as part of a broader organizational restructuring, primarily affecting its Commercial and Xbox divisions. Microsoft leadership stated the reductions are intended to align resources with evolving business priorities in a shifting technology market.
Shifting Priorities in a Changing Market
According to a memo from Microsoft Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman, the company is adjusting its operations to match a rapidly changing industry. Coleman noted that customer needs and business models are evolving, necessitating a transformation in how the company organizes its work and where it focuses its investments.
While Microsoft emphasized that these roles are not being replaced by artificial intelligence, the company acknowledged that AI is altering the nature of daily tasks. The firm stated that some automated workflows require employees to adapt their skill sets to remain effective in supporting customers who are navigating similar technological shifts.
Concentrated Impact on Commercial and Gaming Units
The layoffs are concentrated within the Microsoft Commercial business and the Xbox gaming division. In the Commercial sector, the restructuring builds upon a previous “Frontier Company” announcement, aiming to embed engineering experts directly alongside customers to accelerate technology deployments.
Within the Xbox organization, the company is undergoing a restructuring process intended to position the gaming business for long-term viability. As part of this transition, Microsoft is moving four of its gaming studios under new management. The company stated that this specific move is designed to preserve both the intellectual property and the ongoing projects associated with those studios.
Redeployment Efforts and Departure Support
Microsoft has stated that it is prioritizing the redeployment of staff into new roles where possible. According to Coleman’s internal communication, the company successfully moved more than 4,000 employees into new positions over the past year, with an additional 500 placements occurring this month.
For those whose roles are eliminated, Microsoft committed to providing financial support and resources to assist with their transition. The company also noted that more than 30% of eligible employees opted into a voluntary retirement program, a strategy the organization plans to continue exploring to reduce the necessity of involuntary job eliminations in the future.

Leadership indicated that the company remains in the early stages of this transformation. Coleman stated that other parts of the business may face similar adjustments as the organization continues to align its investments with high-priority areas. The company has pledged to maintain two core commitments throughout this process: driving differentiated value for customers and providing support for employees affected by structural changes.
