Microsoft is overhauling its flagship artificial intelligence suite with three core capabilities—Home, Code, and Autopilot—while shifting small and midsize business licenses to usage-based billing starting November 2, 2025. The updates, announced by Microsoft executives including Chief Partner Officer Nicole Dezen and AI at Work Chief Marketing Officer Jared Spataro, push artificial intelligence far beyond basic chat functions into complex task delegation and application development.
Home Command Center and Office Integration
The new Home starting point functions as the primary hub within the Copilot app, uniting instant chat and delegated work tasks. According to Microsoft, Home allows users to review recent activity, look up information, and draft content while managing daily workflows across meetings, chats, documents, and emails.
Within Home, users can access Chat for quick questions or use Cowork to delegate end-to-end tasks like responding to requests for proposals, creating launch kits, and building financial close packages. Microsoft announced that the company will soon introduce automatic query routing, which will direct user requests to Chat, Cowork, or Code without manual selection.
Live Document Synchronization and Today Hub
Microsoft is integrating Word, Excel, and PowerPoint directly into the Copilot experience. Users can draft briefs, model budgets, and build presentations that create or update real, editable documents synchronized live for entire teams.
The platform also features Today, a command center scheduled for private preview in October that alerts users to missed messages, calendar changes, and high-priority tasks across Outlook and Teams.
Code Generation and Autopilot Agents
Moving beyond conversational chat, the new Code capability allows non-developers to build applications, dashboards, automations, and workflows using natural language prompts. Powered by the underlying technology of GitHub Copilot, Code enables users to generate persistent desktop widgets and cloud-hosted internal applications. Microsoft stated that Code and Home will roll out gradually through the Frontier program in the coming weeks.
Autopilot, a persistent and proactive personal agent renamed from Scout, functions with its own cloud-hosted identity, memory, and workspace. Users can assign Autopilot a specific name, role, and goal to monitor channels, follow up on threads, and run recurring work independently, even when users are away from their computers. Autopilot is scheduled to expand to private preview at the end of September.
Shifting SMB Billing Models
Alongside the product updates, Microsoft is revising pricing configurations for Microsoft 365 Copilot Business licenses for small and midsize businesses. Effective November 2, eligible services will default to usage-based billing.
Nicole Dezen, Microsoft’s chief partner officer and corporate vice president of global channel partner sales, noted in a statement that the updates extend partner opportunities beyond individual productivity into complex deployment scenarios. Solution providers are increasingly implementing pay-as-you-go services for clients utilizing advanced AI agents.
Chris Regan, managing partner at Spring Lake, New Jersey-based B&R Business Solutions, told CRN that clients utilizing agents frequently reach their spending quotas and request quota increases within the first week of the month.
Fabric IQ and Work IQ Rollouts
To support these enhanced workloads, Microsoft is moving its Fabric IQ context layer into general availability through Chat and Cowork, with Fabric IQ integrated with Code arriving through the Frontier program soon.
Work IQ is scheduled to enter public preview on September 30, with a full rollout planned throughout October.
